July Newsletter: Opening the Heart

Dearest Friends,

We sit down to write this month’s newsletter in the wake of both tragedy and joyous celebration. Our hearts are shattered by the senseless deaths in South Carolina. At the same time, as proud allies of the LGBT community, we could not be prouder or more elated at our nation’s decision to recognize marriages for all loving couples.

We emerge from the emotional upheaval of the previous few weeks with a renewed reverence for the strength of an open heart. We have witnessed its ability to relentlessly persevere in the face of unimaginable adversity; to forge connections and bridge impossible divides; to break but to also heal time and time again.

We hope to support you this month and always in approaching the world and each other with strong and able hearts, so that you may greet adversity with collaboration, anger with compassion, animosity with love. For when we are brave enough to come together as humans with hearts open and giving, we find that, truly, Love Wins.

With hearts wide open,
Your Kula

June Newsletter: Blessed Solstice

Dearest Friends,

With summer fast approaching, we find ourselves drawn outside to absorb the sun’s rays, enjoy the lengthening days, and embark on new adventures. We are physically experiencing more light and radiating it back out into the world. It is a luminous time of year!

As far back as our oral history reaches (and likely even farther), this joyous time in our annual journey around the sun has been celebrated with rituals of thanks and appreciation. We can tap into the rising energy of the season and borrow from it to lift our spirits and our health. In so doing, we revive something not just of the past, but of something eternal. We honor both the heat of the sun and the internal fire within each of us.

We are offering many ceremonial and celebratory offerings this month. We hope you will join us, and we shall all shine brighter together.

Wishing you a blessed Summer Solstice.

With joy and love,
Your Kula

Why Meditate?

By Gianna Carotenuto

Meditation is not a religion. Though first established by the Buddha Sakyamuni in the 5th c. B.C.E., meditation is a practice of being present.  BE HERE NOW as Ram Dass wrote in 1971 and started the Western World’s dance with how to achieve awareness and peace of mind. Some call it bliss.

Many people meditate to calm their minds, others their hearts, others their nervous system. As the origin of yoga, meditation is a holistic practice that brings balance to mind, body, spirit. Each of us can bring our greatest challenges, fears, annoyances, grievances, joys and celebrations to a meditation practice. Yet the practice of meditation, or mindfulness without the religious overtones, is truly mastering the “art of staying.” Being with whatever arises and not running away, not seeking distractions or escape, but truly being present in chaos and in calm. Why Meditate?  To find our clearest sense of self, the center point of our being, to disarm the threat of being aware of what is truly going on inside and outside of us. There are many reasons and many benefits. The key is “start where you are” as Sharon Salzberg says. That means as an apprehensive, sometimes frustrated and doubtful beginner! In fact, Suzuki Roshi’s greatest teaching on meditation for the Western audience was titled “Zen mind, Beginner’s Mind.” In being a beginner we allow ourselves to be uncertain, vunerable and open to something new! Who knows what will happen!

Join Gianna for her upcoming Meditation workshop on July 25th!
