January Newsletter: New Beginnings

Dearest Friends,

Welcome to 2015! We hope that your holidays were full of warmth and joy, and that you’ve emerged from the celebratory bustle invigorated and ready for the new year stretching out before you.

This is a traditional time to grow introspective and to examine elements of our selves, our habits, and our lives. We’ll find that some feel light and buoyant, and help to propel us forward on our personal paths. Others may feel heavier, acting as counterproductive weights to bear on our journeys. Now is the perfect time to consider what is working in our lives to support us in our goals and intentions, and what may need to evolve in order to keep from weighing us down.

We hope to be a part of your journey forward this month and this year, and look forward to supporting you in community and well-being.

With gratitude,

Your Kula

New Class Offering

Restore and Renew Yoga
Fridays, 5:45-7:15pm
with Cosetta Romani

Begins Friday, January 9th!

Restorative yoga is a powerful healing practice that deepens our relationship to stillness and silence. It addresses the issues we store in our tissues and organs, it balances the nervous system and optimizes the overall energy flow. When you are in passive postures supported by props, using no muscular effort, the focus is on relieving the grip of muscular and inner tension. From that more spacious and receptive space,  feelings and emotions are allowed to be released. When our body, mind and spirit come to balance, our life becomes balanced.

Alison began dancing and practicing yoga at the age of three with her mother who taught creative movement and yoga while they were living in Africa. From there, she danced throughout her childhood and received her BA in History at Brown University where she was awarded the Weston Fine Arts Award in Dance. She was lucky enough to discover Ana Forrest and completed her teacher training in 2001 in Chicago. She went on to complete her Pilates certification at BodyTonic Gymnasium in Brooklyn in 2005 and began teaching Pilates and yoga full time.

Alison brings a deep sense of knowledge and creativity to her classes. She currently teaches Mom & Baby, Wednesdays, 11:00 – 11:45am.

Adopt-A-Family with Kula

gift boxes over white background 3d illustrationWe are excited to announce that we are participating in the YWCA’s Adopt-A-Family program. We have “adopted” two families this year, and will be sponsoring them this holiday season by purchasing gifts and gift cards for the children, and providing gift cards to help cover the cost of their holiday meals.

We would love your help in supporting these families!

If you’d like to participate, please stop by the Kula front desk, where you’ll receive a card with the name of the person you’ll be shopping for, along with an item from his/her wish list. Simply purchase the item and return it to Kula (be sure to save your receipt to turn in too!).

Gifts should be returned festively wrapped (gift boxes are strongly encouraged over gift bags). Securely affix a label to your package with the recipient’s name,  You can place your wrapped gift under the tree at Kula, and return your gift receipt to the front desk. If you purchased a gift card, please return it in an unsealed envelope with the recipient’s name written on it. We invite you to include a cheery (unsigned) greeting card as well, for a warm and personal touch. Please do NOT put gift cards inside wrapped gifts.

All gifts and gift cards must be returned to Kula no later than Friday, December 12th.

Please note, this year the YWCA is putting slightly more emphasis on gift cards. Each child will receive at least one gift card along with his/her other gifts. While gift cards are not always as much fun to shop for, please know that they play an important role in our families’ holiday. Providing a gift card allows the parent to go shopping and select a gift personally for her own children – something she may not be able to do otherwise. In that way, a gift card you provide to a child is also a precious gift to his/her mother.

We thank you in advance for coming together with us as a community in order to help and support our local families in need. Your generosity is truly appreciated.

November Newsletter: Enriching Our Lives with Gratitude

Dearest Friends,

After an amazingly beautiful summer in Seattle, the fall weather has found us at last. We are pulling out our cozy sweaters, finding warmth and comfort inside, and enjoying the unique beauty this season has to offer. In this month when we traditionally turn our attentions to giving thanks, we take comfort in these things that keep us warm, and remind ourselves of the many small and meaningful things that make our life what it is.

Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present. Giving thanks makes people happier and more resilient, it strengthens relationships, it improves health, and it reduces stress. We are offering a number of workshops and events this month that will help facilitate our collective reflection and expression of gratitude. Also, as a more tangible expression of appreciation, we will be hosting a clothing drive to benefit homeless youth in our city (more details below).

We hope you join us in being even more open to the small daily blessings in our lives, and in reflecting those blessings in our actions toward others.

With warmth and support,

Your Kula

Kula’s Warm Clothing Drive to Benefit Homeless Youth

It’s hard to know just how many homeless youth are living in King County–but it is estimated that in Seattle alone, 700-1000 young people are in search of a safe place to sleep each night. Some will manage to nab one of the few open beds in a youth shelter or may find that they’re able to “crash” on a friend’s couch for one more night. But many more will be forced to settle for the inadequate shelter offered by an overpass, abandoned building, door stoop, or a late night bus. And now that we’re entering the rainy winter season, it’s going to be even more of a challenge to stay warm, dry, and safe.

Our November drive will support YouthCare in their important work, and we’d love to have your help!

During November, Kula Movement will be hosting a warm clothing drive befefitting YouthCare. Each month, over 400 youth come to YouthCare’s drop-in center looking for clothing or blankets, a hot meal, or simply a place to escape the cold. According to YouthCare’s website, “That’s the first step to earning their trust, and our ultimate goal is to help them move off of the streets and prepare for life. In the meantime, those survival supplies are quite literally saving lives.”

Below is a list of items we’ll be collecting. Please note that certain items must be new and unused, while others are acceptable in gently used condition.

  • New underwear and long underwear
  • New wool or thermal socks
  • Warm coats or rain jackets
  • Warm hoodies (for layering)
  • Sleeping bags
  • Warm blankets
  • Gloves and handwarmers
  • Hats and scarves
  • Backpacks
  • Travel-size toiletries (toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner)
  • Gift cards to Target, Fred Meyer, Safeway, QFC

YouthCare serves young people ages 12-24, so keep that in mind as you select sizes to donate. We have been told that the greatest need currently is for all men’s and women’s adult sizes, particularly XL, XXL, and XXXL.

We will be setting up a collection bin in our space, and invite and encourage you to participate if you are able. Please have your donations in by Wednesday, November 26th.

Thank you for helping us make a difference in a young person’s life!

“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” ~Mother Teresa

About YouthCare and Homeless Youth

YouthCare has been providing services to Seattle’s homeless youth for 40 years. Their most visible facility is the Orion Center, which provides safe, overnight emergency shelter for up to twenty 18-24 year olds, where they can also do their laundry, take a hot shower, and eat a meal. Beyond satisfying these basic needs, the Orion Center is an entry point to other services – more permanent housing options, education and employment opportunities, health care and case management. YouthCare also runs the only short-term emergency shelter in Seattle for homeless youth aged 12–17. More information about the programs and services YouthCare provides can be found here.

Why are youth homeless?

This is a common question and one with a complicated answer. But one thing is certain: they are not homeless by choice. There is a common misconception that these are “rebellious” teenagers who have opted out of a traditional home life. The reality is far more distressing.

According to YouthCare:

  • 74% of homeless youth have been physically abused at home.
  • 39% were sexually abused.
  • Up to 40% identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning. Most of those were kicked out for simply being who they are.
  • Many have prior mental health problems and come from families that could not or would not support them.
  • Many have “aged out” of foster care and other support systems, or have simply slipped through the cracks – something that is disturbingly easy to do in overtaxed systems stretched to the breaking point.

In the end, of course, it doesn’t matter why youth are homeless. What matters is that these youth are part of Seattle’s community — and they need this community’s help. Please contribute if you are able, and if this is a cause that resonates with you. We are grateful for whatever support you are able to give.

October Newsletter: Exploration, Discovery & Growth

Dearest Friends,

What comes to mind when you hear the word “challenge”? Do you think of struggle and difficulty? Do you envision the daily hectic rush required to get your kids to school on time? Or maybe that worrisome project at work that keeps you tossing and turning at night? Many of us (myself included) surround the mere idea of challenge with mental mountains of negative connotations.

A simple mind shift, though, reminds us that personal challenges can be less about difficulty and more about exploration, discovery, pushing toward greater potential and, ultimately, tremendous growth. Framed in this light, “challenge” becomes intriguing and playful – even fun!

It is this type of challenge that we’re looking forward to in October. Our 30 Day Yoga Challenge begins on Saturday, October 18th, and we’re so excited to embark on this month-long journey of discovery. We do hope you’ll be able to join us – if not in person, than certainly in spirit. We encourage you to take some time to reflect on opportunities for exploration in your own life. What can you learn? Where can you grow? How can you challenge yourself in a positive and nurturing way this month?

With warmth and support,

Your Kula

Autumn Restoration and Rejuvenation

Dearest Friends,

September has arrived, ushering us from the hot days of summer into the coziness of fall. We hope you are looking forward to viewing the season’s vibrant colors, breathing the crisp air, hearing the crunch of leaves beneath your feet – and, yes, maybe even feeling a little rain on your skin after our wonderfully sunny summer.

We invite you to find inspiration in the falling leaves. Let them lead you to a quiet moment of introspection and reflection, where you can follow their lead and gently discard those things in your life that are no longer beneficial, making way for new growth in those areas that give you support, health, and joy.

We look forward to sharing and delighting in the changing season with you this month through yoga, wellness, and community.

With love and light,
